Current roles at Ford Sumner
Legal
We are seeking experienced lawyers who can manage diverse caseloads and provide clear, effective legal advice, advocacy and solutions for our clients in the following roles:
Senior Associate or Principal – Corporate and Commercial
We are seeking an experienced Senior Associate or Principal to join our thriving Corporate and Commercial team. This is an opportunity to work across a varied portfolio of high-quality corporate and commercial matters, with a particular focus on transactional work, company law, shareholder arrangements, governance, and business restructuring.
You will work closely with Partner Sarah Churstain, including advising clients in New Zealand’s airport sector, where the firm has a strong and well-established presence, as well as a range of other valued clients. The role offers a high degree of autonomy, alongside the opportunity to mentor and support junior members of the team.
Associate or Senior Associate – Construction
We are looking for an experienced construction lawyer with at least six years’ PQE to join our growing team. You will bring strong front-end construction expertise, a sound understanding of the Construction Contracts Act 2002 and working knowledge of other relevant legislation. You will advise a diverse group of clients on significant construction and infrastructure projects, including work within New Zealand’s airport sector and renewable energy developments such as solar farms. The role will primarily involve drafting, reviewing, and negotiating construction contracts and providing practical, commercially focused advice throughout the project lifecycle.
As a senior member of the team, you will also help strengthen our wider construction practice. Experience providing strategic oversight or high-level support on construction disputes would be valuable. You will have opportunities to share your expertise through client presentations, seminars and industry events across New Zealand, build enduring relationships and establish yourself as a trusted adviser in the sector.
Associate or Senior Associate – Family
We are seeking an experienced family lawyer with at least six years’ PQE to join our team. You will advise clients across a broad range of family law matters, including relationship property agreements and disputes, parenting and care arrangements, protection orders, family dispute resolution and Family Court proceedings. Working closely with Special Counsel Joanne Cheer, you will manage your own files, provide clear and pragmatic advice, negotiate effective outcomes and represent clients through mediation and court processes where required.
At Associate or Senior Associate level, you will also be expected to build trusted relationships with clients and referrers, contribute to the continued growth of the family law practice and, over time, generate work through your own professional networks.
Depending on your experience and interests, the role may include supporting the wider private client team on related matters such as trusts, estates, succession planning and asset protection.
Senior Lawyer or Associate – Dispute Resolution/Litigation
We are seeking a motivated dispute resolution/litigation lawyer with at least four to five years’ PQE. Working closely with Partner Jaesen Sumner, you will advise and represent a diverse range of clients in civil and commercial disputes, with opportunities to take meaningful responsibility for matters from the outset. You will work across a varied litigation and dispute resolution practice, assisting clients to assess risk, develop strategy and resolve disputes efficiently. The work will primarily involve general civil and commercial litigation, with scope to contribute to employment and construction disputes depending on your experience and interests.
Non-Legal
AML and Trust Account Manager (part-time)
We are looking for an experienced AML and Trust Account Manager to lead the firm’s AML/CFT programme and compliance processes while providing day-to-day trust account administration. This role will ensure regulatory obligations are met, compliance frameworks remain effective, and AML best practice is embedded across the firm.
While ideally these roles are full-time and on-site in Wellington, we would be open to discussing part-time and/or remote/non-Wellington based options.
